eat

I truly enjoyed reading “Eat Move Sleep” by Tom Rath. I liked the fact that he broke things down into simple steps that are not only doable, but also manageable. I find myself often times reading nutrition and health books and being bombarded with complicated reasons why we should eat this way, Rath does not do that, he without even realizing it worked on the psychology aspect of why we eat. The first chapter illustrates this point. He suggests we ask ourselves this every time we eat something: Ask yourself if the next food I put in my mouth is a net gain or a net loss. This is a tool I can use, this is doable, and this will be added into my approach to food.

Sleeping I know from my own experience is a fundamental aspect of good health. While I had to wake up every 3 hours to suction because of my trach I felt grumpy, foggy brain, ate more than I should, and just fumbled around like a chicken without a head. Then miraculously I didn’t have to suction so much, then I started getting back my 8 to 9 hours of sleep a night and I was back to my normal amazing butterfly self. I knew and appreciated being reminded of the suggestions that Rath had about getting quality sleep.

Moving, I am ashamed to admit this I don’t move much. Part of it is my breathing issues and the other part is my fear and frustration with how out of shape I am at. Reading “Eat Move Sleep” gave me some ideas about moving more in my life. Such as getting up and stretching every 20 minutes, or even walking in place or doing some sort of movement activity. He surely gave me a lot to think about, and I hope to be working through this problem with my fears with my therapist when I start seeing him.

Check out this book; get some great ideas and tips on how to add health to your body. It is well worth the time and effort to read and it isn’t a fad diet book at all, one of the things I absolutely love.
