Before I became sick and started becoming a patient and had to take a lot of medications and focus on my healthy I never paid attention. I ran on automatic pilot. I never took care of my body, nor did I take care of my emotional well-being or my spiritual well-being. I focused on taking care of others only.

My life has changed a lot since those days. How so you may be asking yourself? I no longer take for granted my capabilities to breathe. When it became difficult for me to take a deep breath in and then release it I knew something was wrong. I could no longer deny that I was not healthy. That is when my first actions towards my health started. Breathing is something that is automatic and you don’t realize its importance until you no longer have that capability. I also started taking stock of my life and started focusing on where I want to go and who I want to be instead of always be an encouragement and blessing to others. I can still be an encouragement, but I also have to take care of myself in the process. I can’t be an advocate, friend, sister, auntie, or neighbor without first taking care of my own needs and health.

I am still working on the elements of what healthy looks like for me. I struggle, but I do have the tools and the mindset to accomplish what it is I want to. My illness has taught me the value of not material objects, but the people who are in my life and that include me.
