I’m not a fan of football, so why did I read Ben Utecht’s book “Counting the Days While My Mind Slips Away”. I will tell you why. I love stories of individuals who struggle, trust God, and continue to live life despite the challenges. Ben Utecht sure has lived a life full of challenges. I have to be honest. I never have heard of him. I didn’t know he sang and did a song for his wife in 2014. I didn’t know he won the super bowl with the Colts.

Here is why I find this an inspiring and lovely book:

  • He describes his family life and tells us how much he loves his wife and his daughters.
  • He talks about sustaining concussions and how it has affected his life.
  • He talks about his advocating for those who have traumatic brain injuries like he has.
  • He talks about how he achieved his success in football.
  • Most importantly he tells us why he is writing this book. Because he is losing his memory and wants his family to know how much he loves them and what he remembers now before he loses those precious memories.

I’m still not a football fan. But I can empathize the injuries players receive while playing the game. I can have compassion for the players who don’t get the support from the organization and their bosses when they have those injuries. If you are a football fan, even if you are not this book is worth the read. Check it out!

I was given a free copy of Ben Utecht’s book “Counting the Days While My Mind Slips Away” from Howard books in exchange for my honest review. The opinions I express are my own.
