Rest and sleep are not the same thing. Did you know that? I didn’t. Not until I read Saundra Dalton-Smith’s book Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity. How many of us have gotten the proper amount of sleep and still felt tired, unenergetic, and not rested? Many of us do. Rest is essential. Rest allows us to connect with God and recharge our batteries. When I first got sick, rest became an essential part of my healing journey. Some nights I have a hard time falling asleep, especially when steroids are involved or other medications that I have to take. Since sleepless nights are going to be part of my life I had to make a choice to not worry about not getting enough sleep and just relax, and rest when I can. It is not easy being sick. Although, Dalton-Smith’s book is not geared towards the chronically ill, the information in it is still valuable. Here is why, many of us don’t have healthy boundaries. We don’t know how to set them, how to let go and forgive when there are people who cross them or damage us. We haven’t let go of the idea that although we set boundaries, the other person has a right to say they aren’t going to respect them. What do you do then? You let it go, forgive them, move on, and keep saying no anyway. I grew up believing that I had to say yes to everything. In order to be a good, proper, Christian woman I had to submit to the authority of my parents, my elders, the church elders, and men my ability to say no. We all have so many spoons, (those of us in the chronic illness world know what this means), this means, that we are only allowed so many spoons for the day and we get to choose how they get used. I think this is true for everyone, not just those of us in the chronic illness world.

I enjoyed this book a lot. I liked the scripture references, the ideas, information, and the writing itself. And if you want to do the 30 day Sacred Rest Challenge. I will provide the link below.
