I just finished a thought-provoking book by Albert Tate called “How We Love Matters”. This is a book about racial reconciliation. I was drawn to this book because I am a white woman that wants to know how to start the healing process for our community between the different cultures, between the Blacks, the Whites, the Asians, Hispanics, and the Ingenious People here in the United States of America.

The chapter that spoke the most to me was what the actual definition of white privilege is. I know, for me I assumed it meant something else, when all it means going around in the community without being accosted by the police or authority figures. I assumed it meant economical reasons. I was wrong and I am willing to admit that I was wrong and extend my apology to those who have offended in my past. I know differently now.

Yes, I have not been accosted by authorities or the police. However, I do know what it feels like to be discriminated against for other reasons besides my skin color. I feel this gives me the opportunity to have compassion and empathy for my Black brothers and sisters in my community. There is more to this book than this chapter. Tate gives us all an opportunity to look beyond what we assume and get to the heart of the matter. One thing he said, and I fully agree. What does it matter what the persons background or history is, no one deserves to be beaten and murdered by anyone, including the police and authority figures.

If this is a subject, you are interested in and would like to consider a different viewpoint then this is a good book for you to dive into. I know I have a different viewpoint now because of it.
