While receiving my Rituximab infusion for my GPA (Wegener’s) I read Will by Will Smith. I grew up watching Fresh Prince of Bell Aire and I remember when his song came out too. I was in middle school. I have always respected Smith and Jada. This book gave me a chance to dive into what made Will Smith, himself. I am humbled by how raw and authentic he is in telling his trauma history and the depth of his own pain and suffering. A lot makes sense, especially what happened at the Oscars. I respect his integrity and his willingness to go outside of the box and admit when he his wrong and take responsibility. Not many do that. The writing style is simple, clear, and full of great details about one man’s life and how he got to where he is now. This is a great memoir. I’m glad I read it. I love memoirs of different types of people so that I can learn how they became who they are and how they used their own trauma stories to become their own heroes and heroines in their lives. Will Smith used humor to achieve his. But he also used his determination and resilience too.
