Message from Jamie Holloway
For eleven years I have been learning to live well with chronic illness. It hasn’t been perfect. I haven’t always been successful at achieving my goals. It has been a chaotic, messy, learning experience that has made my life adventurous. I have learned a lot about how complicated, dangerous & even emotionally, spiritually & mentally draining living with several diagnoses is.
I am asked by my many doctors, nurses, caregivers, friends, family, strangers & store clerks how I have maintained my good attitude despite the many medical adventures, I have lived through, that might have left me feeling bitter, angry, broken & unforgiving. All I can say is, I made decisions & I followed through. One decision was to fight for me. Jesus fought for me so why shouldn’t I?
I also realized, I didn’t want my crawl through lifelong sickness, just for my own benefit. I wanted to be a wellness advocate & help those who are in the same predicament. I wanted to be one of the helpers that Mr. Roger’s speaks about. I do this by reminding myself that my attitude can help me navigate through the dark channels of chronic illness.
I am determined to say thank you to the doctors, nurses, caregivers, anyone who helps me. Showing gratitude reminds you that your life is not over just because you are sick. I say thank you & I mean it. I also decided that I didn’t want to become idle. I want to actually accomplish something, so I started writing.
I believe communicating my pain, needs, & being willing to listen as part of communication allows me to be able to be in a good relationship with my team. I have a good support system of family, friends, doctors, nurses, & caregivers who allow me to achieve many of the goals I have made. I am able to live in my home & able to keep on breathing, writing, reading & loving on my boy, Nicholas.
Since 2017 I have been an owner of Wellness Works NW. I serve as the Research Manager. I am a lead writer & my column is called Chasing Wellness.

Sick and Tired

To The Greatest Dad.
It has been 7 years of Father’s days since I have been able to celebrate the day with him. He has been gone for 8 years now. I miss him a lot. I often times wonder what he would have thought of all of his children and where they are all at in their lives. I wonder how...
Butterfly Lady Dreams
I have been in a slump for quite sometime and I decided to look at the places and things I want to do before I live this earth. You might be surprised, maybe you won't. I want to accomplish all of these things and I will. I just need to get my life in balance and in...
My Beef With Meat
Another recipe book and information about eating a plant based diet. Yes, I seem to be fascinated with this eating plan, since I keep checking books out that center around plant based eating. I know in my heart this is the accurate way of eating. In the great...
The Heart Of The Matter
I found this book difficult to read, not because the writing was clear and concise, because the subject matter was difficult. Dealing with emotional aspects has always been a challenge. I am one of those individuals where extreme emotions cause me to want to...
Whole
If you have watched the DVD “Forks Over Knives” then you are familiar with T. Collin Campbell and his research he did on China back in the 50’s. And the book he wrote called “The China Study”. What I liked about reading “Whole” was the diagram of how he did his...
Whole 9
Today was supposed to be the start date of my Whole 9 eating plan. Guess what? I failed. You might be asking me why is a tough chick like me who can handle broken thoraxes, trach care, and other amazing medical adventures not able to start and commit to an...
The Brain In Your Kitchen
The brain is a wonderful organ. It starts working the moment you get up in the morning and does not stop until you get into the office. —Robert Frost A book of short essays that blew me away with all the scientific facts about fish oil and sugar and my eyes are open....
Survival Lessons
I love Alice Hoffman. So when an opportunity came for me to read “Survival Lessons” I jumped not far, but I did jump. Hoffman describes lessons she learned while recovering from Breast Cancer. She shared things she wanted to have said to here in books and...
Stepping Stones To Recovery
I have not written anything for Jamie Chases Butterflies for a couple of days. I have been resting. The end of last week became a busy time period for me. Despite my chemo treatment on Wednesday I went to and finished my SOAR training. I am happy about this. I...
